Tough and rugged 2"x 12" cedar garden beds with unmatched quality. Remember these are 2" thick (most are 1") and 12" tall (most are 10"), held together at the corners with meaty 2"x3" thick stakes, reinforced by quality structural lag screws (these screws are used on Retaining Walls!), and built with 100% untreated western red cedar. I also reinforce the boxes in the middle with a beam to connect both sides in order to prevent outward bowing during the changing of the seasons.
**Please note these do not have bottoms, as these are meant to be laid on the ground. If you want to put them on a concrete patio and want some bottom to retain soil, you can use weed fabric or I can add bottoms.
Most people underestimate the size of these cedar boxes and the fat screws I use to clamp the corners. The threads on these screws are like razorblades that'll pierce and hold the cedar planks together. Additionally these have "washer heads" which are large in diameter to push the wood together. Those dinky decking screws won't cut it, they're far smaller in diameter and sink through the box, my heavy duty screws securely clamp the box together.
If you want the best chance to extend the life of your box, put a thin layer of drainage gravel (2"- 4") underneath the cedar portion of your box for water drainage as wood rots faster when it can't dry out. These boxes will most likely last you 10 years or more. You won't be disappointed when you compare my boxes to the store bought ones in quality and price (stores usually use staples/nails and 1" thin wood).
Anywhere else you'll have to send an email/text/call for a quote but if it's SE Portland itll probably be $60ish as I am located in Hillsboro. Soil is often an additional $50 delivery fee + cost of soil at Recology. TheformwarmPortland soil in Newberg is an additional $80.
My boxes are also sold through ThewormfarmPortland (www.thewormfarmportland.com) located out near Newberg. He also sells high quality OMRI certified organic soil meant for the discerning individual who want better yields and bountiful harvests. Look, it's fine with me if you want to grow some puny tomatoes in these nice boxes. That's your business. But wherever you buy your soil, keep in mind it's the soil, not the box that'll grow the plants and vegetables.
**If you're looking to buy home depot soil for a box larger than 2x6, think again. You'll end up spending more at Home Depot buying 1-2 cubic feet (cf) bags than buying a cubic yard (cy) of soil. As a general frame of reference, you'll need 1 cy of soil for a 4' x 8' x 12" high raised garden bed. If you decide to dig down to get more planting space, please account for the increase in soil you will need.
Example: Home Depot sells Miracle-Gro Nature's soil which is almost comparable to the 80/20 mix (definitely inferior) at $9 / 1.5 cf. You need 18 of these bags to make a cy, so 18 x $9 = $162. Why do that when I can deliver 80/20 OMRI soil mix and put it into your box for the same amount (or less) while you enjoy your afternoon cocktail. So, would you rather take the trip to home depot, load up the bags, unload the bags, get dirty dumping them into your garden beds, and possibly throw out your back? Or would you rather relax and enjoy yourself while someone else does all the work for you?
--What to do/expect once you've ordered your boxes
We are currently not setup for email notifications, therefore there will be no email updates. However someone will check in with you the day before delivery. Before we arrive, you'll want the ground prepped. What does that mean? Usually people remove the existing sod, and lay down cardboard (as much as possible). If you have any seaweed, fish heads (if you know fishermen), kelp, vegetable scraps (no onions, peppers, ginger), tree branches, logs, etc throw them in where you'll be gardening (Scroll through the pictures for instructions). Then we'll unstrap the boxes from our truck and help you carry it to your garden.
--If you've also ordered soil
The delivery cost only covers delivery of soil where our dump trailer can reach. Most often this is your driveway. So please make sure to have your driveway clear and try to give us as much room to maneuver. You can lay (at minimum) 6x10 tarp down to make cleanup easier, otherwise your soil will be fine on bare concrete. If you do not have a tarp, one can be purchased from us for $30.
--If you've ordered soil + soil delivery to your box
We'll park as close as possible to where we'll be delivering the soil. Then we'll pull out our wheelbarrow and shovel then cart back and forth with speed until all your soil has been delivered to your garden beds.
If you're unsure about anything I've covered, please feel free to reach out and ask questions. It's alot of information and we'll be happy to assist regardless if you purchase from us or not.
I stand by my craftsmanship. If you're unsatisfied upon seeing these boxes, I'll gladly take them back.
Lastly I want to thank you all for supporting me when your purchase. Your money goes toward making all those hammer smashed fingers, painful slivers, random aches and the long nights worth it. Thank you.
